YOUTH GROUP LESSON 109
MATERIALS AND ADVANCE PREPARATION:
• Easel paper or newsprint and markers
• Bibles
• 5 x 7 cards—two per student

SESSION OUTLINE
FOCUS:
Hand out the 5 x 7 cards and markers. Ask students the following questions, and after each question, ask them to give themselves a score between 1-10. After each question, ask them to hold up their scores, then go on to the next question. There are four questions, so students can use both sides of their cards.
1 When it comes to being a good friend, I’d rate myself a _______.
2 When it comes to being a good son/daughter, I’d rate myself a _______.
3 When it comes to being a good brother or sister, I’d rate myself a _______.
4 When it comes to following Jesus, I’d rate myself a _______.

Share this background information with the students.
If we want to know how Jesus wants us to live, we need to read what he said. The Sermon on the Mount is one passage that is packed full of directions from Jesus. The only problem is…..it’s humanly impossible to follow what he says. Through the years, church leaders and theologians have tried to explain the Sermon on the Mount and how it should or should not be taken literally. Thomas Aquinas divided Jesus’ teaching into “requirements” and “suggestions.” Requirements were rules like the Ten Commandments, and “Suggestions” were more idealistic commands like Jesus’ statements about lust and anger.
