| One small (subversive?) act was to teach her students the Christmas song, I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. The first verse goes like this: I heard the bells on Christmas day Their old familiar carols play And wild and sweet the words repeat Of peace on earth, good will to all. But she didnt stop with the first verse. She taught them the second verse as well. Then in despair I bowed my head There is no peace on earth, I said For hate is strong and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to all. The students nodded their heads. They understood that despair. Most of them had been babies or young children during the Christmas bombings of 1972. They lost their homes and many of them, their parents. Then Miriam taught them the third verse. Then pealed the bells more loud and clear God is not dead, nor doth he sleep The wrong shall fail, the right prevail For peace on earth, good will to all.
